What is a GTO?
The Group Training Organisation model helps create more opportunities for individuals to gain practical skills, work experience, and formal qualifications while meeting the workforce needs of different industries. It also provides flexibility for employers who may not be able to commit to the full duration of an apprenticeship or traineeship but still want to contribute to developing a skilled workforce. We specifically hire trainees and place them with host employers for them to gain real industry experience.
How does it work?
1. Employer Engagement: GTOs identifies and engages employers across different industries who are willing to take on apprentices or trainees. Employers may not have the capacity to commit to a full apprenticeship or traineeship program on their own, so GTOs help them by sharing the responsibilities.
2. Recruitment and Employment: GTOs do the recruiting for you, we will advertise the job, then conduct the interviews. From there based on location and how the applicant went, we will allocate you three or four candidates. You will be sent candidate bios as well as notes from the recruiter that conducted the interview. From there it’s just as simple as choosing which one you’d like to work with you.
3. Training and Support: It is the GTOs job to ensure that the apprentices or trainees receive the necessary training and support, which may include off-the-job training and assessment in partnership with Registered Training Organizations (RTOs). We also monitor the progress and welfare of the apprentices or trainees throughout their training.

How to get a GTO license?
If you and your company want to provide training and employment opportunities to apprentices and trainees, you are legally required to have a GTO license. The steps to getting a GTO license are:
- Start the process by submitting your application, which includes a self-assessment for compliance with the National Standards for Group Training Organisations, along with any supporting evidence.
- The VRQA will then review your application and conduct a financial viability assessment, requesting specific financial information about your organization.
- Step 3 involves an audit to determine your compliance with the National Standards. This may include both desk and site audits.
- After the audit, the VRQA will provide feedback and request a response from you.
- Finally, in Step 5, the VRQA will make the final decision on your application. If approved, you'll receive recognition for up to 5 years.
